Reconstitution is the one step between a freeze dried powder and a dose you can draw. It sounds like chemistry. It is one number you can do in your head.

The one ratio

Add one tenth of a milliliter of bacteriostatic water for every milligram in the vial. That is the whole thing. A 5 mg vial takes 0.5 mL. A 10 mg vial takes 1 mL. A 30 mg vial takes 3 mL. Every one of them lands in the same place: 10 mg in every milliliter. For the great majority of peptides, that is the target you want, because it is what keeps the math this simple.

Ten milligrams per milliliter is not a random goal. At that strength, 1 milligram is exactly 10 units on a U-100 syringe, so a dose in milligrams reads straight off the barrel with no conversion. No per compound table. No calculator gymnastics. The dose you want is the number you pull to.

The water is not a detail. The water is the math. Change how much you add and you change every dose you will ever draw from that vial.

Is it a U-100 syringe?

Peptides are drawn on a U-100 syringe: 100 units to the milliliter, so one unit is 0.01 mL. They come in three barrel sizes, 0.3, 0.5, and 1 mL, all U-100. The trap is a U-40 syringe, a veterinary scale where one unit is 0.025 mL. Draw to the same number on a U-40 and you pull two and a half times the liquid. Same mark, a very different dose.

The ratio only works if the water is right. Eyeball it, add a splash too much, and every draw from that vial is off by the same percentage, quietly, for the life of the vial. There is no warning light. Measure the water the same way you measure the dose.

A milligram is a thousand micrograms. A dose written in mcg, read against a vial labeled in mg, is the fastest way to be off by a factor of a thousand in either direction. Before you do any math, confirm both numbers are in the same unit.

Did you swirl or shake?

Send the water down the inside glass wall, not straight onto the powder, and turn the vial slowly until it clears. Never shake. A shaken vial foams, and the force can damage a delicate peptide. Then keep the reconstituted vial cold and use it inside about a month. Where that 28-day rule actually comes from.
